LUX Ceramics Studio & Artist-in-Residence

Ceramics Artist-in-Resident, Susan Stark, gives us an inside look at her daily activities in the ceramics studio at the LUX Center.  Here she is discussing a project she is working on with Nikole Andersen, who has been taking private lessons from Susan for over a year. You will notice that Nikole is a little camera shy!

Winterfest!

LUX Artist-in-Residence, Kate Running, making holiday poppers with local youth!
This past Friday was a special night for all of us here at the LUX Center.  Not only was it the opening reception for one of our Artist-in-Residence, Susan Stark, but it was also the night of our 2nd annual Winterfest. The evening, that lasted from 5-8pm, was filled with free hands-on activities throughout the building and plenty of exceptional artwork to look at and purchase.
LUX Artist-in-Residence, Matt Dercole, assists in painting ceramics ornaments!
We were joined by over 300 of our community members, in an evening of fun and art making for the entire family.  Activities included creating personalized pop-up cards, making holiday poppers, painting ceramic ornaments and decorating cookies with edible paints!
LUX Artist-in-Residence, Trudie Teijink, helps to create pop-up cards!
Overall, it was a great success, thanks to all of you who came out to the LUX Center.  The pop-up cards seemed to be the biggest hit, with tables crowded all through the night.

Garden - by ceramist Susan Stark

Artist-In-Residence, Susan Stark makes functional pottery that she intends for daily use. Stark is intrigued by Islamic art, Indian textiles, and the sublime beauty of nature, and finds inspiration in these for her surface decorations.

Her work incorporates altered terra cotta forms decorated with exposed raw clay, soft floral patterns, and shiny glazes to make these pieces one-of-a-kind.

Currently, she obtains these decorative surfaces by creating raised designs with intaglio cut pressed slabs. Stark believes that the unique forms and surfaces will motivate people to use the pots which is at the heart of what inspires her to be a potter.

Stark has used her work to build a warm and inviting garden, which she, "envisions as a sanctuary from the cold Nebraska winter presently outside."
